The world is experiencing a technological revolution, with artificial intelligence changing the game across industries. As the demand for clean, efficient energy to power the AI boom rises, Alpha Ring — a pioneer in micro-fusion technology — is building a model focused on developing talent, creating innovative products, and helping cement Taiwan’s place in the global fusion ecosystem.
The company’s core technology is Hydrogen-Boron (p-11B) aneutronic fusion, a sustainable alternative to the traditional Deuterium-Tritium approach. While this technology requires extremely high temperatures, it is extremely safe and produces no nuclear waste. And as a hub of research and development in Asia, Taiwan has the potential to lead in the development of p-11B.
“From an R&D perspective, Taiwan is still catching up in the fusion space, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Its efforts are developing, they’re progressing, and Taiwan is doing a lot for the world in general,” says Charles Gary, CEO of Alpha Ring. “This progress is critical as the technology transitions from pure research to reality.”
For a long time, commercially viable nuclear fusion technology was only talked about in theory. Now, it has become part of a global strategy — a key example being the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), a collaboration between 35 countries, including the European Union. “If Taiwan wants to find its niche within the eventual fusion industry, it should start preparing now,” says Gary.
He says that preparation starts with education. Alpha-E, one of the company’s three fusion models, designs curricula and programs to help students gain hands-on experience from the moment they step inside the classroom. To that end, Alpha Ring is partnering with leading science and engineering institutions such as National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and National Tsing Hua University, drawing on Taiwan’s long track record of successful industry-academia collaboration in the semiconductor sector to advance the commercialization of fusion technology.
Beyond its talent development work, Alpha Ring is also positioning itself within the global supply chain, working to create a vertically integrated supply chain ecosystem for fusion technology in Taiwan.
